The Making Of A Terror: How A Land Mediator Became A Notorious Bandit

Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, widely known as Gentle de Yahoo, the self-proclaimed Commander of the Biafra Liberation Army (BLA), had terrorized communities in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State for years before his reported apprehension by security forces. His prolonged reign of violence left a trail of destruction, deaths, and mass displacement, forcing residents to live in constant fear.

Gentle de Yahoo and his gang were allegedly responsible for a series of high-profile attacks, kidnappings, and killings in the region. Several communities fell under their control as the group imposed authority through intimidation and brutality. A native of Aku autonomous community in Okigwe, Okorienta was reportedly expelled from Orsu in Orlu LGA about four years ago before relocating his criminal operations to his hometown, where his crimes escalated to murder, including the killing of a soldier couple returning for their traditional wedding. In one particularly gruesome attack, the female soldier was beheaded, further heightening terror in the affected communities.

What began as mediation in local land disputes gradually transformed into violent enforcement. Families that once sought Gentle de Yahoo’s intervention in property disagreements found themselves victims of his increasingly ruthless methods. Over time, his group graduated into organized kidnapping, primarily targeting political figures, which led to a sharp decline in political participation in Okigwe LGA as many feared retaliation. Residents were reportedly forced to seek the gang’s approval for even the simplest social events, including marriages, burials, and festivals.

Many locals described an atmosphere of fear, with checkpoints set up across villages, homes occupied without consent, and properties seized indiscriminately, including those of diaspora families. The resulting insecurity prompted a mass exodus, disrupted business, and left once-thriving communities such as Ihube, Aku, Umulolo, Agbobu, Amuro, Umuowa Ibu, Umualumoke, and Ezinachi resembling ghost towns.

Reports linked Gentle de Yahoo’s group to atrocities such as organ harvesting, armed robbery, and land seizure. Traditional rulers were compelled to pay homage to the gang, with some even forced to prepare meals for its members. Nearly all monarchs in the area reportedly sought approval from the group before holding public events, with only a few, including Eze Acho and Eze Aku, avoiding Okigwe entirely after prior abductions or threats.

While reports emerged claiming Okorienta had been apprehended during a major military operation in Ihube, many residents remain skeptical, citing the lack of visual confirmation or official statements. Witnesses and locals have alleged that he continues to move freely in Okigwe, raising questions about the sources of weapons and logistics sustaining his operations, which include daily shootouts with security forces and extensive communication networks.

Residents are now urging the Imo State Government to take decisive action to halt the group’s activities, calling for measures to block the supply of arms and better equip local vigilante units to restore security. As fear and instability persist, the people of Okigwe are demanding urgent intervention to end the long-standing reign of terror and bring justice to the communities affected by Gentle de Yahoo’s crimes.
