with several high-ranking military officials, had devised a plan to seize Abacha in Enugu State and force his resignation, but the operation was thwarted when Abacha became aware of the scheme.

He shared this information during an appearance on Channels TV’s “Inside Sources” with Laolu Akande on Friday.

Fadipe suggested that if the plot had gone ahead, Diya and his fellow conspirators would have found it easy to take control in Abuja.

He recounted, “On December 9, 1997, after exchanging pleasantries with my boss at the office, the ADC left. Once he was gone, I conducted the usual security briefing, and my boss asked, ‘Are you sure everything’s okay?’ This was right before the bombing attempt on December 13, 1997, marking the first time he directly indicated that something was amiss.

“The previous day had seen the Chief of Army Training Conference commence in Enugu, with Abacha, the Commander-in-Chief, expected to inaugurate the event. Suddenly, he aborted his trip to the airport and returned to the Villa, which caused my boss some concern.

“The following morning, my boss confided in me and a few security personnel: ‘Had he traveled yesterday, he would have been captured, leading to a change in government.’

“I realized I was in a precarious position when he mentioned that if Abacha had proceeded to Enugu, he would have been abducted and coerced into resigning, leading to a shift in power.”
