Addressing the Extra-ordinary Summit of ECOWAS in Abuja, Tinubu, who chairs the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the organization, acknowledged that while the sanctions were initially intended to prompt negotiations, they have inadvertently become a barrier to progress.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of pursuing avenues that genuinely improve the welfare of the people through democratic governance, stressing that punitive measures should not impede the collective pursuit of regional prosperity.

He stated, “In my mind and heart, that which is hurtful yet ineffective serves no good purpose and should be abandoned. ECOWAS was established for the unassailable objective of improving the lives of the people of this region through fraternal cooperation among all member states.”

Highlighting ECOWAS’s commitment to security, social stability, democratic governance, and economic development, Tinubu reiterated that the organization’s actions were guided by principles of compassion, hope, and harmony.

Drawing inspiration from the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and Lent, Tinubu urged fellow leaders to extend a hand of friendship and solidarity to the affected countries, emphasizing the need for empathy and understanding.

He proposed the indefinite suspension of economic sanctions as a tangible gesture of goodwill, affirming, “In the Spirit of the holy month and of the Lenten period, and with hearts bestirred by goodwill towards all our people, let us extend a hand as brothers and friends to those in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.”
