According to a statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President acknowledged inheriting critical issues but vowed to tackle them head-on. Tinubu highlighted the immense potential of the Anambra Basin, which holds an estimated one billion barrels of oil and 30 billion cubic feet of gas. He stressed that harnessing these resources could provide Nigeria with an alternative energy source, reinforcing the government’s resolve to develop the basin for national benefit.

Addressing the region’s energy infrastructure, the President underscored the importance of investing in gas as a viable alternative to petrol, stating that “there is no wasting of time” when it comes to expanding gas infrastructure. He added, “We will do it together, and I am lucky I have good governors to partner with.”

Praise for Governor Peter Mbah’s Development Initiatives

Tinubu also lauded Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for his remarkable efforts in economic and infrastructural development. The President praised Mbah for demonstrating how effectively utilizing state revenue can spur local growth. He affirmed that increasing financial allocations to local governments is essential for national progress, noting, “More revenue going to the sub-nationals and local governments is not a waste. It is for development.”

Mbah further noted that Enugu was the first state to gain oversight of its local electricity market from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.

In line with his ambitious vision, Mbah revealed his goal to increase Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within the next four years, positioning the state among Nigeria’s top three by GDP.

During his visit, President Tinubu inaugurated several key projects in Enugu, including:

  • The Smart Green School
  • The New Haven/Bisalla Road
  • The International Conference Centre
  • The Command and Control Centre
  • 150 new patrol vehicles equipped with surveillance cameras

These initiatives reflect the President’s focus on regional development, infrastructure, and security.
