The baby, thought to be no more than a day old, was found on January 3, 2025, around 10 AM after police from the Mpape Division responded to an urgent call. According to SP Josephine Adeh, the child, wrapped in cloth, was promptly rescued and taken to the Mpape Primary Health Care Centre for medical checks, where doctors confirmed that the baby was stable.

Following a tip-off from concerned locals, police arrested Khadija Ali, who admitted to abandoning the baby. During her questioning, she revealed that she had been overwhelmed by financial difficulties and could not care for the child after her husband left her.

SP Adeh condemned the act, calling it a severe violation of the child’s rights, and assured the public that the police would continue to protect vulnerable members of society. The mother will face charges under Sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act, 2003.

The baby will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while investigations into the abandonment continue.
