Flu cases saw an alarming spike over the festive season, with hospitals seeing a record 4,102 cases on Christmas Day, climbing to over 5,000 by December 29, a sharp increase from just 1,190 cases a month prior.

Alongside flu, hospitals are overwhelmed by a surge in cases of norovirus and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), putting further strain on already stretched critical care units. The NHS is scrambling to manage the crisis, adding 1,300 beds and streamlining coordination efforts to cope with the influx of patients. On Christmas Eve, the NHS saw a record number of 15,094 patients discharged—40% higher than usual.

Julian Redhead, NHS’s National Clinical Director for urgent and emergency care, expressed grave concern over the rising flu hospitalizations, which surpassed 5,000 by the year’s end. He warned that as temperatures drop and the risk of additional respiratory complications rise, the situation could worsen, especially for the most vulnerable.

Redhead urged the public to take necessary precautions and avoid overburdening NHS services during this critical period.
