Tobi Amusan Kicks Off Season With 200m Silver In Jamaica
Nigeria’s sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan opened her 2026 season with a strong performance, finishing second in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica. According to sports reports, Amusan, widely recognized for her prowess in the 100m hurdles, clocked a season-best 23.25 seconds, securing the runner-up position in a competitive field.
Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah claimed victory in 22.61 seconds, while fellow Jamaican Ackera Nugent finished third in 23.35 seconds. This race marked Amusan’s first competition since earning silver at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she was Nigeria’s sole medallist.
Her performance in Jamaica provides an early indication of form as she prepares for a demanding international schedule. Amusan is scheduled to return to her specialist 100m hurdles at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on July 4. The Diamond League event at Hayward Field is expected to feature a world-class lineup, including Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams, and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark.
Eugene holds significant milestones in Amusan’s career. She set the current world record and won her first world title there in 2022, before claiming the Diamond League final crown in 2023. The 28-year-old remains a dominant force in her event, having won the Diamond League final consecutively from 2021 to 2023.
