Togo Requests Increased Electricity From Nigeria

According to Ireporter Online, the Republic of Togo has indicated its intention to increase the volume of electricity it purchases from Nigeria’s Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) to meet rising domestic demand and provide stable power to newly connected consumers. The request emerged during a strategic meeting between NDPHC management and a delegation from Compagnie Energie Electrique (CEET) du Togo, the country’s national electricity utility.

The Togolese delegation, led by CEET Director-General Débo-K’mba Barandao, visited NDPHC to strengthen existing cooperation and explore opportunities for expanding cross-border electricity trade. Currently, CEET purchases about 75 megawatt-hours of electricity from NDPHC, an arrangement that has significantly supported electricity stability in Togo and contributed to economic activity.

Barandao praised NDPHC for its consistent supply and emphasized that the partnership has been mutually beneficial, strengthening regional energy cooperation. He noted that the addition of new industrial and commercial customers to Togo’s national grid, combined with government efforts to expand electricity access, has driven a sharp increase in demand. Consequently, CEET expressed interest in increasing the volume of electricity it imports from Nigeria to support the country’s power expansion strategy and ensure reliable supply to new consumers.

In response, NDPHC Managing Director and CEO Jennifer Adighije affirmed the company’s readiness to deepen collaboration with CEET and sustain electricity exports within West Africa. She highlighted that NDPHC operates multiple power plants under the National Integrated Power Project and is well-positioned to support regional electricity trade. Adighije stressed the importance of establishing bankable and sustainable commercial arrangements, including structured payment mechanisms and credible financial guarantees, to ensure the long-term viability of cross-border electricity supply.

Both parties described the meeting as productive, reiterating their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the electricity sector and agreeing to continue discussions aimed at increasing electricity supply from Nigeria to Togo. The proposed expansion is expected to further bolster energy cooperation, improve electricity access, and promote economic growth and regional power stability across West Africa.
