Nigerian media personality and fashion influencer Toke Makinwa has sparked a new debate on gender, marriage, and financial motives, asserting that men, rather than women, are often the true gold diggers.

During a recent episode of her podcast, Makinwa challenged the long-held stereotype that women marry wealthy men solely for money. She criticised society for disproportionately targeting women with the label “gold digger,” while ignoring men who intentionally marry into affluent families.

“People constantly insult women for knowing what they want,” Makinwa said. “Men openly claim that women date for money, but the reality is that the other gender can be the biggest gold diggers in the world.”

She further pointed out that men often pursue and marry women from wealthy families without facing similar societal scrutiny. “They marry into generational wealth, and they do it without shame,” she added.

Despite her strong critique, Makinwa clarified that she does not resent men who make strategic marital decisions for financial security, noting that financial considerations have long been a mutual aspect of marriage.

Illustrating her perspective, she revealed that she would give similar guidance to her own brother, advising him to consider a partner from a solid financial background. “If my brother comes to me with two ladies and asks which one to marry, I will advise him to marry the one from a good financial background,” Makinwa said.

According to Ireporter Online, Makinwa’s comments have reignited conversations about gender, marriage, and the double standards that persist in society.
