Cooking Gas Price Climbs To ₦8,081.75 In October — NBS

According to Ireporter Online, the average price of a 5kg cooking gas cylinder in Nigeria surged from ₦6,395.82 in September to ₦8,081.75 in October 2025, representing a 26.36 per cent increase, recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows. The report, released on Thursday in Abuja as part of the bureau’s “Cooking Gas Price Watch” for October, also revealed a 16.86 per cent year‑on‑year rise, from ₦6,915.69 in October 2024.

State-level analysis highlighted notable disparities in cooking gas prices across the country. Borno recorded the highest average cost at ₦8,376.44, followed by Yobe at ₦8,357.98 and Ondo at ₦8,340.30. The lowest average prices were observed in Bauchi (₦7,051.54), Ebonyi (₦7,744.99) and Akwa Ibom (₦7,806.31). By geopolitical zone, the North‑West had the highest average retail price at ₦8,188.55, while the South‑South recorded the lowest at ₦7,956.61.

The report also indicated an increase in the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas cylinder, which rose 15.36 per cent month‑on‑month from ₦16,155.09 in September to ₦18,636.77 in October. Compared to October 2024, the price climbed 11.37 per cent from ₦16,734.55. Borno again led with the highest average price at ₦19,391.57, followed by Yobe (₦19,339.51) and Ondo (₦19,289.65), while Ebonyi (₦17,610.88), Akwa Ibom (₦17,783.79), and Anambra recorded the lowest prices. Regionally, the North‑East had the highest average retail price for the 12.5kg cylinder at ₦18,953.86, with the South‑South recording the lowest at ₦18,207.65.

Observers have linked the recent spike in cooking gas prices to industrial actions by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) at the Dangote Refinery, which began in September. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Dr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, also noted that ongoing maintenance at the Nigeria LNG Train 4 facility has contributed to the rising costs. Following these developments, prices at various outlets reportedly jumped from ₦1,100 per kg to as high as ₦1,800 per kg.
