Trump 20% Tariff On EU Imports Triggers Retaliation Plans From Europe

She described Trump’s tariff actions as a significant setback for global businesses and consumers. Von der Leyen emphasized that Europe is prepared to take protective measures to safeguard its economic interests, warning that the new tariffs would lead to higher costs for everyday goods, including groceries, medications, and transportation, impacting millions of European citizens. Additionally, she cautioned that inflation would rise, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable groups in society.

The EU is currently finalizing its initial set of retaliatory measures, with more actions planned should talks with the U.S. fail, according to von der Leyen. She reassured European citizens, stressing that Europe is well-equipped to manage the economic fallout from the tariffs.

Von der Leyen also highlighted ongoing discussions with the automotive and pharmaceutical sectors, which have been particularly hard hit by the tariffs.

On Wednesday, Trump announced new blanket tariffs of 10 percent on most imports to the U.S., with even higher penalties for countries with large trade deficits. Imports from the EU, in particular, will be subjected to a 20 percent tariff.
