UK PM Calls For Better Safeguards For Home-Schooled Children After Girl’s Murder
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for better safeguards for home-schooled children following the brutal murder of a 10-year-old girl, Sara Sharif. The girl’s father and step-mother were convicted of murder after subjecting her to years of abuse, including broken bones, burns, and bite marks...READ MORE…
The case highlights the failure of child protection services to intervene despite warning signs. Sara’s teacher had reported her bruises to child services, but no action was taken. Her father had taken her out of school to be taught at home, citing concerns about her education.
Starmer emphasized the need for protecting safeguards for children, particularly those being home-schooled. The British-Pakistani girl was found dead in her home in August 2023, with extensive injuries.
The Children’s Commissioner, Rachel de Souza, described Sara’s death as a “profound weakness in our child protection system.” She called for a ban on home-schooling of suspected abuse victims.
The Department for Education stated that it is already taking action to ensure no child falls through the cracks and is bringing in greater safeguards for children in home education. The government has promised to announce details soon on home-schooling safeguards and reforms to children’s social care.
The case has raised concerns about the safety of home-schooled children, with 485 children in England dying or being seriously harmed by abuse or neglect in the year to April 2024. The perpetrators are due to be sentenced on Tuesday.
