Unjustly Held’: Ex-Imo Commissioner’s Wife Demands Action From Tinubu Over Husband’s Detention

In a heartfelt petition dated December 13, Excel, represented by the human rights organization Initiative Against Human Rights Abuse & Torture, urgently called for government intervention. The petition highlights the harrowing circumstances surrounding her husband’s detention, which began after he criticized Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma for failing to deliver on his campaign promises.

Excel’s petition, which has been submitted to multiple authorities including the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), demands the immediate release of her husband and accountability for the police’s actions.

The disturbing details of the case reveal that on November 27, Fabian Ihekweme was forcibly taken from his Abuja residence without an arrest warrant and detained without legal representation or medical care. The family was left in the dark for over 24 hours before the police confirmed his detention, with allegations surfacing that he was wrongfully accused of supporting the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Excel has expressed grave concern about the violation of her husband’s constitutional rights, describing the incident as a violation of democracy and freedom of expression. She further emphasized that Fabian’s treatment is not just an injustice to him but to all Nigerians who dare to hold their leaders accountable.

“The trauma of this unlawful detention has severely affected our family. Dr. Ihekweme was denied medical attention, his phone was confiscated, and his rights ignored,” Excel stated. “We demand a transparent investigation into these actions, and a call for protection of citizens’ rights to express themselves freely without fear of persecution.”

As the call for justice intensifies, Nigerians are watching closely to see whether the government will act swiftly to address these serious human rights violations.
