WAEC Under Fire as Osun Students Take English Paper at Night

Parents in Osun State have voiced deep concern after their children were made to sit for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English Language paper late into the night on Wednesday.

Many expressed dismay over what they described as a highly inappropriate and unsafe arrangement, citing the country’s ongoing security challenges. The late-night examination, reportedly caused by logistical delays and the late distribution of materials by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), sparked outrage among families.

Speaking with DAILY POST, a parent, Julius Olufemi, lamented the incident, calling it unprecedented.

“My twins were scheduled for the English Language paper. They remained at school for hours. By the time I returned from work, they were still not home. I contacted their school and was told they hadn’t written the exam yet. I was shocked — this has never happened before,” he said.

Another parent, Felicia Orji, narrated her experience from out of town, saying she received a call from her son after 9 p.m., informing her he had just completed the exam and was heading home.

“I stayed on the phone with him until he got home safely. I was shocked and very worried,” she said.

Ogunleye Jumoke shared that her daughter initially returned home when the exam was delayed, only to be recalled later when the materials eventually arrived.

“My husband and I accompanied her back to school and waited until she finished the exam. The school is far from home, and it was a very stressful evening,” she recounted.

Parents condemned WAEC for what they described as poor planning, noting that the experience was demoralising for students and stressful for families.

A journalist based in Osogbo, Adebayo Oderinu, called for accountability, urging WAEC to identify and penalise those responsible for the disruption.

“This is a case of institutional irresponsibility. First JAMB, now WAEC. Heads must roll,” he asserted.

Another parent, Oluwakemi Damilare, called for prayers for students still writing exams late at night.

“As you go to bed, remember our children who are still in the classroom at this hour,” she said.

Reports indicate that the examination began in many schools across Osun State at around 8 p.m., with concerned parents gathering at school gates to await their children.

As of press time, WAEC had yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
