Speaking during an official visit to Lagos on Saturday, Adeyeye dismissed allegations of political interference, emphasizing that NAFDAC’s actions are strictly in line with its mandate to rid Nigeria of harmful and unregistered drugs.

Her visit followed a major raid at the Idumota Open Drug Market in Lagos, where officials seized large consignments of illicit pharmaceuticals, including Cocodamol and falsified GSK Ampiclox. The agency also discovered unregistered, expired, and banned drugs, including controlled substances.

“We are protecting lives. What NAFDAC is doing is exactly what it is mandated to do. There is no politics in this operation,” Adeyeye stated.

The NAFDAC DG further revealed that several traders at the market were operating without proper registration under the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN).

As part of its nationwide enforcement drive, NAFDAC has deployed over 1,000 personnel to clamp down on the circulation of counterfeit drugs. Recent operations have also led to the closure of major drug markets in Onitsha, Anambra State, and Aba, Abia State.

In a significant move, authorities shut down the Onitsha Bridgehead Drug Market over allegations of selling illegal pharmaceuticals, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from dangerous medications.
