Why Troops’ Feeding Allowances Were Delayed – Army

The Nigerian Army has clarified that a delay in receiving funds from the concerned institution is responsible for the non-payment of three months’ Ration Cash Allowances (RCA) to troops safeguarding the Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam Project in Niger state, dispelling allegations of diversion by senior officers as reported by some online media.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 25, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized the army’s strict adherence to a zero-tolerance policy for financial misappropriation and its staunch opposition to actions detrimental to troop morale.

He stated, “Preliminary investigation reveals that troops deployed at the Chinese Company in Niger state have always been paid in tranches by the Nigerian Army on receipt of the funds from the institution concerned.”

Nwachukwu further explained that the last tranche payment of RCA from the institution in question for the deployed troops was due on February 28, 2023. While the next tranche is being processed, the Army Headquarters has taken steps to cover the period from March 1 to June 30, 2023, to alleviate the troops’ operational conditions.

In addition, provisions have been made to ensure the daily sustenance of the troops, addressing the effects of the tranche mode of payment. The RCA for the troops has not been diverted by any senior officers, as incorrectly portrayed in the publication.

Nwachukwu affirmed the Army’s unwavering commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of troop welfare across all operations and endeavors. This commitment aligns with the Command Philosophy of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, prioritizing the provision of “Sound Administration” for NA personnel.

The Nigerian Army places significant emphasis on ensuring the welfare and well-being of its personnel, recognizing the positive impact on overall morale.
