Wike Apologises To Oshiomhole, Regrets Working For Obaseki’s Re-Election

Governor Nyesom Wike of River State apologized to former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday, saying he regretted working for the re-election of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State in September 2020.

Wike apologized to Oshiomhole at the inauguration of the Rumuepirikom Flyover in the state’s Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, which the ex-APC chairman commissioned.

“We are now friends, let bygones be bygones,” Wike told a smiling Oshiomhole.

Oshiomhole, who served as governor of Edo from 2008 to 2016, handed over the reins to Obaseki, who was a member of the APC at the time.

The two men, however, fell out over intra-party squabbles, and Obaseki was unable to secure the APC ticket to return to office in 2020, which was won by Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Obaseki joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and allied with Wike, as evidenced by his frequent visits to the Rivers strongman’s residence during the crisis leading up to the Edo State Governorship Election in 2020.

The Edo governor went on to win the PDP’s governorship ticket, defeating Ize-Iyamu, who was backed by Oshiomhole and other APC heavyweights such as former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu and President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recently, Obaseki and Wike have been at odds amid a crisis rocking the PDP, as the former backed PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, while Wike continued to demand the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as a precondition for supporting Atiku’s presidential ambition for 2023.
