Wike Breaks Silence: ‘I Won’t Stop Rivers Assembly From Impeaching Fubara Netizens React
Days after sparking controversy with his remarks about the Ijaw ethnic group, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, received a grand civic reception in Abalama, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State…….READ MORE
The event, which doubled as a thanksgiving service, saw a massive turnout of Kalabari Ijaw indigenes celebrating the former Rivers State governor.
Wike, welcomed with cheers from his supporters, stated that despite threats, he chose to attend the event, proving that his critics were merely engaging in “radio noise.”
During his speech, Wike emphasized that he would not interfere in the affairs of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule. This stance suggests he will not obstruct any attempt to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Additionally, Wike accused the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Tammy Danagogo, of fueling the political crisis in the state. According to Wike, Danagogo played a critical role in escalating tensions between Governor Fubara and the Amaewhule-led Assembly.
Mocking his opponents, Wike dismissed their opposition as mere propaganda, saying, “I heard some people say I won’t come here. Who are they? How many are they? Today, you have shown the world that all this radio noise is not the real thing.”
He clarified his recent statement on the Ijaw ethnic group, stating that his remarks were misunderstood. He explained that Fubara himself initially declined to contest for the governorship and instead suggested his then-Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu, for the position. However, key stakeholders, including Chief Alabraba, OCJ Okocha, and Sergeant Awuse, urged Wike to support Fubara.
Wike reaffirmed that Ijaw people are not evil and advised against threats like pipeline destruction, advocating instead for diplomatic engagement.
Wike accused Fubara of withholding the salaries and allowances of Assembly members for over a year, causing hardship for them and their families. He warned that he would not prevent the lawmakers from carrying out their constitutional duties.
“They told you to seize Assembly members’ salaries for more than a year, and you did. Now, see what has happened. I won’t stop the Assembly from doing their work,” Wike declared.
He further stated that the Assembly members who helped Fubara win the governorship should not be abandoned, dismissing claims that he was demanding money from the governor.
Wike traced the crisis to SSG Tammy Danagogo, whom he accused of using his elder brother, a judge, to secure an ex parte order declaring 27 Assembly members defected and allowing the governor to present the budget to a smaller group of lawmakers.
He asserted that Danagogo had long been bitter about not becoming governor and was now misleading Fubara.
Wike reminded the audience that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had intervened to restore peace in Rivers but accused Fubara’s allies of undermining the agreement.
He also dismissed those opposing him, saying, “Who now has high blood pressure? Them or me?”
Wike vowed to continue supporting President Tinubu, stressing that he remains loyal to those who stood by him.
“Politics is about interest. People must not use others and dump them,” he said.
Chairman of the occasion, Ferdinand Alabraba, praised Wike for his leadership and commitment to the Ijaw people.
“We will always stand by you,” he assured Wike, adding that the minister’s impact in Kalabari land would be remembered for generations.
