Rapper and songwriter Erigga has voiced his concerns over what he describes as the death of genuine romance in Nigeria, attributing the decline to the influence of internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys. According to Ireporter Online, the artist expressed his views during an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, where he lamented how materialism has overshadowed emotional connection in modern relationships.

Erigga explained that the extravagant spending habits of Yahoo boys have created unrealistic standards for relationships, making it difficult for average men to keep up. He noted that many women now prioritize financial gain over love, while men increasingly measure their self-worth by their wealth.

“Yahoo boys don kill romance. Genuine romance no longer exists. When last did you see two lovers holding hands in the street? It’s been long,” the rapper said. He further reflected on how dating used to be simple and sincere, recalling a time when an outing with just a meat pie and Fanta from Mr Biggs was enough to make women happy.

Erigga emphasized that men also share part of the blame, accusing them of setting unrealistic standards through ostentatious lifestyles. He added that such behavior has led women to elevate their expectations, shifting the dynamics of love and affection.
