Official documents from the Ministry of Personnel Management, seen by AFP, confirmed that Yoon’s annual salary will increase by three percent to 262.6 million won ($178,400).

While suspended, Yoon retains his presidential status as the Constitutional Court deliberates on his impeachment, meaning he continues to receive his salary and benefits.

Many citizens have expressed outrage over this development, with one social media user posting: “It makes my blood boil. He’s getting paid for doing nothing.” The post quickly went viral.

Yoon’s impeachment stemmed from his controversial decision to suspend civilian rule on December 3, during which military forces were deployed to parliament. This triggered South Korea’s most significant political crisis in decades, leading to his suspension. He is now also facing an investigation into his actions, with authorities seeking to arrest him for questioning.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, serving as acting president, is also under suspension and will see his salary rise to 203.5 million won ($138,350).

The public has been vocal in criticizing these developments, with protests and viral social media posts decrying Yoon’s pay raise amid his suspension. Investigators are also preparing for another attempt to arrest Yoon after a failed attempt earlier this month.
