consortium of West African countries working toward introducing a vaccine to combat the viral disease that poses a serious public health threat in Nigeria.

Lassa fever, endemic in the country, continues to affect numerous states. In 2024, Nigeria reported over 9,600 suspected cases and nearly 200 deaths. To address the ongoing crisis, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control activated the Lassa Fever Emergency Operations Centre last December.

Prof. Pate emphasized that improving healthcare outcomes depends on cross-sector collaboration at all levels of government, and he highlighted the critical role of education, the environment, and various ministries in tackling health challenges like Lassa fever. He also addressed the need for improved healthcare services, social welfare, and financial protection, particularly for vulnerable communities facing health-related poverty risks.

The summit is a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to not only address Lassa fever but also foster regional cooperation in tackling public health challenges.
