You Won’t Believe How Much Cheaper Rice Just Got! FG Takes Bold Action

The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to expand its subsidized rice program to combat food insecurity in the country, with sales launching in Lagos, Kano, and Borno states. This initiative, recently announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, aims to offer 50kg bags of rice for N40,000, a significant discount compared to the market price of around N90,000. The government plans to distribute 30,000 metric tonnes of rice, equating to approximately 1,000 trucks loaded with 600 bags each.

Despite recent claims that rice sales in Abuja had been halted, ministry officials affirmed that sales are ongoing and actively expanding to other states. However, the program has faced challenges, including coordination issues and public compliance at the National Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) center. Reports indicate that some individuals have attempted to sabotage the initiative by buying rice to resell in the market, which undermines the subsidy’s intended impact on low-income earners.

With food prices soaring and the naira’s value declining, the government is committed to ensuring that essential staples remain affordable for all Nigerians. The expansion of the rice subsidy program is part of broader efforts to tackle rising food insecurity and promote self-sufficiency in food production, as emphasized by Finance Minister Wale Edun during a recent press conference.
