Obaseki explained that the current period is not appropriate for engaging in intense political activities, as such actions could lead to distractions.

His media adviser, Crusoe Osagie, asserted that no amount of blackmail would change Obaseki’s decision to withhold support for Shaibu’s gubernatorial ambition at this juncture.

Osagie reiterated that the governor firmly believes that diverting his attention from governance to engage in intensive politics would not serve the best interests of the people of Edo State. He criticized Shaibu, labeling him as a rabble-rouser who exhibited indiscipline and arrogance by attempting to incite a crisis.

Osagie pointed out, “The blame primarily lies with Governor Obaseki for trying to maintain a civilized approach in his interaction with his deputy, which in a society like ours could be misconstrued as a sign of weakness.”

The relationship between Obaseki and Shaibu has deteriorated due to Shaibu’s decision to contest the upcoming election. Obaseki is reportedly supporting a Lagos-based professional as his successor.

Amidst the strained relationship, the deputy governor has taken legal action by approaching the Federal High Court in Abuja to seek protection against victimization. Currently, Comrade Shaibu is abroad in the United States.

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, mentioned that party leaders are working behind the scenes to resolve the issue between Obaseki and Shaibu. Aziegbemi emphasized that the party is striving for peace and reconciliation.

On the other hand, Victor Osehobo, Assistant Publicity Secretary of the APC in Edo, asserted that Obaseki’s desire to become a political godfather would fail. He criticized Obaseki for not demonstrating the patience to learn from his political mentors, and he argued that Obaseki’s attempt to assume a godfather role contradicted his previous opposition to godfatherism.

Osehobo concluded that Obaseki should serve out his term as governor and exit the political landscape without trying to influence future political dynamics.
