A Farewell Tribute: Remembering Chief D U Edebiri, The Esogban Of Benin Kingdom – A Message by Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi

I must admit that I was deeply taken aback by the unfortunate report of the Esogban of Benin Kingdom’s demise.
Oh, what a sorrowful moment it is! The magnificent Iroko tree has fallen, and our hearts are heavy with grief. Throughout the expanse of the Benin Kingdom, sadness pervades the land.
Chief Edebiri, the Esogban of Benin, has been a wellspring of inspiration for both my family and myself since our initial encounter. This stems primarily from his paternal guidance and wise counsel, notably during my tenure as the Managing Director of the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
He was an outstanding WOBITE; Alumni of Western Boys High School, Benin City. In 2013, at 83, he led our Benin Chapter to New York for our reunion. He was very passionate about WOBA issues. They were a tonic for daddy.
The passing of our esteemed Esogban serves as a poignant reminder that life is transient, and we are merely temporary residents on this Earth as it is inherent in the nature of the soul to reunite with its creator. The legacies of our actions during our time on this planet serve as a lasting testament to our past, long after we have departed.
Chief D. U. Edebiri, (the Ọdionwere Edohia , lived a glorious and eventful life, etching his mark in history, much like his predecessor and progenitor who also held the prestigious title of Esama of Benin during his era.
As a prominent Orator, Writer, Activist, Journalist and freedom fighter, Chief Edebiri held a prominent position on the forefront of Nigeria’s quest for independence. He actively engaged in the movement, contributing significantly as a catalyst for youth mobilization during the struggle.
The Esogban of Benin held a position of immense importance within the Oba of Benin’s palace. He served as a guardian of the cultural and traditional heritage of the Benin people. His persona encapsulated a wealth of knowledge and wisdom, serving as a living encyclopedia of historical events in Edo State, tracing back to its origins as the Midwest region up to the present day.
His experiences found their way into various books he authored, becoming a valuable record. His absence leaves a significant void that will be deeply felt.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family. I share in your sorrow, as Chief D. U. Edebiri was a father figure to us all. I encourage you to find solace in the understanding that life is transient, and his legacy will continue to shine brightly. His fulfilled existence has left behind an indelible mark, alongside a legacy of admirable children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
During this difficult time, you are in my thoughts and prayers. I beseech our Lord God for the peaceful repose of his soul. May you find the strength to cope with this irreplaceable loss. May the soul of Ọdionwere Edohia rest in eternal peace.
Signed:
Engr. Chris Osa Ogiemwonyi, FNSE.
Former Minister of State for Works.
