Following this, the tribunal invalidated the win of Muktar Yerima, the incumbent representative from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the same constituency in the House of Representatives. This was due to his involvement in certificate forgery.

Muktar Yerima, who had been proclaimed the winner of the general election on February 18, 2023, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had his legitimate votes nullified due to discrepancies in his primary school certificate.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and former House of Representatives member, Kawu, lodged a complaint with the tribunal, contesting the authenticity of Yerima’s victory based on the use of a counterfeit certificate.

In its ruling on Thursday, a three-member panel of judges upheld Kawu’s petition and voided the position of the NNPP member who was currently in office.

Additionally, the court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retract the certificate of return that had been granted to the NNPP candidate.
