DHQ Reacts To Coup Request

Under the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, the military high command once again reaffirmed its allegiance to the “constitutional authority” of President Bola Tinubu.

The military emphasized that it will stay focused on its well-defined roles outlined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

In a statement issued on Friday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, expressed dissatisfaction with the circulation of online reports concerning welfare concerns within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

The statement read in part, “The suggestion for the military to intervene in our democracy is deeply unpatriotic, malicious, and an effort to divert the Armed Forces of Nigeria from fulfilling its constitutional duties.”

“While the AFN’s leadership places significant emphasis on the welfare of its personnel, we firmly reject any attempt by individuals or groups to incite the law-abiding Armed Forces of Nigeria to engage in any unconstitutional action to change the government in our country.”

“We wish to emphasize categorically that the military is content and more productive within the framework of democracy, and we will not participate in any activity that undermines the democracy that our nation has worked hard to establish.”

The DHQ’s rejection of requests for military interference coincided with a crisis in neighboring Niger Republic, where the military seized power from President Mohamed Bazoum’s constitutionally elected government.

Struggling to curb a series of coups within its member states since 2020, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) set a deadline for the troops who took control on July 26 to restore 63-year-old Bazoum to power by last Sunday or face potential use of force.

Amid a series of economic sanctions including border closures, Nigeria also suspended electricity supply to Niger. However, the coup leaders remained defiant, and the deadline passed without any action being taken.
