Responding to a surprising statement made by Governor Obaseki in which he claimed that a coup and desperation were behind efforts to remove him from office, Shaibu addressed his aides on Saturday morning to reaffirm his loyalty to the governor.

Shaibu stated that political opportunists had misled Governor Obaseki, whom he referred to as his “elder brother,” with the intention of instigating more conflict to exploit the situation for their own benefit.

He expressed incredulity at the idea of orchestrating a coup against a governor who has afforded him considerable latitude to operate.

While firmly rejecting the allegations, Shaibu made it clear that the claims were unfounded and driven by malicious political operators seeking to tarnish his reputation and sow discord between him and Governor Obaseki.

Shaibu emphasized his steadfast loyalty to Governor Obaseki and the values of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to which they both belong. He described it as an honor to serve as Governor Obaseki’s Deputy and highlighted his consistent dedication to realizing a shared vision for Edo State over the past seven years.

One of his aides, speaking after the meeting, stated that any suggestion of ulterior motives or efforts to undermine Governor Obaseki’s leadership is entirely fabricated.

Shaibu underscored his belief in the strength of teamwork and collaboration, noting that he and Governor Obaseki have worked collaboratively to fulfill the promises they made to the people of Edo State. Their achievements in diverse areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation stand as evidence of their combined efforts.

As Deputy Governor, Shaibu asserted that his role is to support and complement Governor Obaseki’s agenda, not to undermine it. He expressed his commitment to policies and initiatives that align with the administration’s goals and aspirations.

Shaibu further emphasized his unwavering faith in the democratic process, affirming his respect for the mandates given to both himself and Governor Obaseki by the people of Edo State. He dismissed the idea of considering a coup to overthrow a legitimately elected government as absurd and offensive.

He called on the media and the public to treat these allegations with skepticism and focus on issues of genuine importance to the people of Edo State—such as improving their lives, providing quality education, ensuring accessible healthcare, and creating employment opportunities.

Amid these allegations, it emerged that Shaibu did not refuse to join the governor in the selection of commissioners in Etsako. A top PDP source clarified that Governor Obaseki had assigned his deputy to address political matters in Edo north, but the deputy was redirected to Benin City by the Chief of Staff to the Governor.

The source affirmed Shaibu’s appreciation for the governor’s tasks and reiterated his unwavering commitment to working closely with Governor Obaseki.

Additionally, the source debunked rumors that Shaibu intended to rejoin the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and emphasized Shaibu’s consistent commitment to working with Governor Obaseki.
