Niger Junta Reveals Why They Shunned Abdulsalami Delegation
Niger’s military leadership, led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani, has revealed the reason for ignoring the delegation headed by Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar (retired), in their efforts to restore the ousted government.
The delegation, sent by President Bola Tinubu, included prominent figures like Abubakar and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, with the intention of resolving Niger’s crisis through dialogue.
However, the delegation returned to Nigeria without capturing the junta’s attention.

In a separate development, as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) continues to seek solutions to the crisis, Nigeria’s intervention team, which included prominent Islamic scholars, visited the coup leaders over the weekend, advocating for dialogue as the means to resolve the political crisis.
During this meeting, the junta informed the Islamic Ulammas, led by Sheik Bala Lau, that they were angered by the earlier delegation led by Abubakar.
General Tchiani, who welcomed the clerics warmly, expressed the coup leaders’ frustration that ECOWAS leaders had not heard their side of the matter before issuing an ultimatum for them to step down from office.

In the meeting held in Niger’s capital, Niamey, Tchiani indicated a willingness to allow diplomacy and peaceful means to resolve the issue. He stated that the coup was undertaken with good intentions, aimed at averting a looming threat that could have affected both Niger Republic and Nigeria.
Tchiani also apologized for not giving the delegation sent by President Tinubu the required attention, citing their dissatisfaction with the ECOWAS ultimatum. Sheik Bala Lau, the National Chairman of Jamatul Izalatu Bida Waikamatu Sunnah, explained that the clerics represented President Tinubu, who had accepted their request for intervention.
One member of the intervention team, Sheik Ahmad Abdulrahman, the Chief Missioner of Ansarudeen Society of Nigeria, clarified that, contrary to some media reports, the team was well-received by General Tchiani, and both parties had productive discussions.
The team plans to report their discussions to President Tinubu and emphasize that war is not a viable option for resolving the matter, advocating instead for a peaceful resolution.
