What Led To My Early Retirement From Service – Oyegun

Former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, shared that he retired from his position as Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service at the age of 48 due to his refusal to compromise during the military government.

This disclosure came during the official unveiling of the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA), a facility established by the Edo State government in celebration of Oyegun’s 84th birthday and his 19 years of service in the federal civil service.

Oyegun emphasized that despite serving for a relatively short period of 19 years in the Federal Civil Service (as opposed to the expected 35 years), he was able to make a significant impact.

He had the opportunity to work alongside exceptional minds in the Civil Service, contributing to the development of both the service and the nation.

He encouraged civil servants to maintain their courage and integrity, urging them to stand for their beliefs. Oyegun highlighted instances from his career, showing his fearless approach to upholding principles. He recounted occasions when he turned down job offers, disagreed with military officials, and stood up for what he believed was right.

He stressed that Nigeria’s current challenges stem from a loss of values, ethics, and the inability to distinguish right from wrong. Oyegun expressed his belief that JOOPSA, as an academy, would play a crucial role in reorienting the minds of those who pass through it, focusing on service, excellence, and integrity as rewarded qualities within the system.

Oyegun commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for the honor and called on Civil/Public Servants in the State to remain dedicated, committed, and morally upright in their service, assuring them that their efforts would be duly recognized and rewarded.
