A video that circulated on Facebook claims that Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation on July 16, 2023, is connected to the ongoing court battle over the outcome of the February presidential election in Nigeria.

In the video, it is alleged that Adamu stepped down from his position as the chairperson of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), after learning about the Presidential Election Petition Court’s decision to nullify President Bola Tinubu’s election due to his failure to secure 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

A man speaking in Pidgin in the video suggests that Adamu resigned to distance himself from “Tinubu’s misconduct,” including allegations of pressuring and bribing judges who were set to nullify Tinubu’s election.

Another video’s caption, also in Pidgin, translates to: “Finally, the court has concluded to remove Tinubu. APC chairman quickly resigned.” The commentator in this video claims that chaos has ensued within the APC due to developments in the case brought by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate.

However, the claim that the petition court has nullified Tinubu’s election is false.

At the time of publication, the election tribunal was still in session, hearing election petitions, including those by Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The law states that the tribunal should deliver its judgment in writing within 180 days from the filing of the petition, with the expected judgment to be delivered in August.

Media reports suggest that Adamu’s resignation was prompted by a crisis within the APC, partly stemming from his strained relationship with Tinubu.

The crisis was aggravated by Adamu’s refusal to recognize national assembly principal officers chosen by the senate president and the speaker of the house of representatives, with Tinubu’s approval.

The resignation appears to be unrelated to developments at the election tribunal, and there is no evidence to support the claim that Tinubu’s election has been nullified.
