Fresh Crisis Rocks Labour Party (DETAILS)

The internal turmoil within the Labour Party (LP) has intensified as various factions have taken steps to install separate state executive members in Lagos State within a 24-hour period.

Under the leadership of Lamidi Apapa, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party inaugurated a 24-member executive committee on Saturday.

In contrast, the Julius Abure group, backed by the party’s former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and prominent member Prof. Pat Utomi, established a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs on Sunday.

This clash of factions is believed to be tied to an upcoming bye-election for the Surulere1 seat in the House of Representatives, which was vacated by Femi Gbajabiamila to assume the role of Chief of Staff to the President.

This situation has further divided party members who have been seeking solutions to the leadership crisis that has been eroding the party’s popularity in the state.

The executive members inaugurated by the Apapa group include individuals such as Adesoyin Olumide (Chairman), Omotayo Anjorin, Olanrewaju Ibrahim, Kayode Yusuf, Felix Odusanya, Peter Olusegun, Nnaemeka Anajemba (Secretary), and Richard Oliseyenum (Assistant Secretary). Other positions such as Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Organising Secretary, Auditor, Legal Adviser, Woman Leader, Youth Leader, and Publicity Secretary were also filled.

Apapa, while inaugurating his faction’s caretaker committee, emphasized that the LP is governed by the law and that no member is exempt from it. He asserted that his faction was prepared to lead the party, noting that Abure had been suspended as the national chairman of the party.

In contrast, Abure expressed confidence that the party would succeed in the presidential election petition tribunal taking place in Abuja. He saw the 2023 general election as a struggle to bring about change in Nigeria and praised the Dayo Ekong-led Lagos State executive committee for its leadership.

As this crisis continues, it has polarized party members further, raising concerns about the party’s weakening influence in the state. Abure’s faction appealed for unity among party leaders and supporters, while Apapa’s group maintained their stance as the legitimate leadership.

The founder of an Obi support group, Kennedy Iyere, suggested that both Abure and Apapa should step aside for peace to be restored in the party. He indicated that the party’s internal strife has left it financially and organizationally weakened, making it difficult to succeed in upcoming elections.

Overall, the internal crisis within the Labour Party in Lagos State has deepened as factions battle for control and legitimacy, with implications for the party’s future success in elections and maintaining public support.
