Good News For Poor Nigerians From FG

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, announced that the Federal Government intends to establish a Presidential Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund during a meeting with members of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Abuja.

Dr. Edu emphasized the importance of making humanitarian response and poverty alleviation a top priority. She highlighted that financial support is crucial for supporting programs, processes, and successful implementation of initiatives.

The minister attributed the humanitarian crises in Nigeria to both natural disasters and human-induced factors, necessitating intervention. She expressed that over 16 million Nigerians are currently affected by humanitarian crises, whether caused by natural disasters or man-made events.

Dr. Edu commended the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for its support of humanitarian causes in Africa and encouraged the foundation to continue its efforts. She expressed optimism about the federal government’s commitment to assisting vulnerable Nigerians impacted by humanitarian crises through various interventions.

Jeremie Zoungrana, the Country Director of the foundation, assured the minister of the foundation’s readiness to collaborate closely with the ministry to support Nigeria’s efforts in addressing major humanitarian crises. He also emphasized the foundation’s interest in engaging with various stakeholders in the sector to achieve their objectives.

Zoungrana highlighted the foundation’s focus on health and its goal of enabling everyone to live a healthy and productive life. He mentioned the foundation’s interest in making investments in creating economic opportunities to reduce poverty through agriculture, financial inclusion, and digital innovation.
