FG To Journalists: Stop Giving Terrorists The Front Page

The Federal Government has urged Nigerian journalists to exercise greater discretion in their coverage of terrorism and banditry by avoiding the placement of such stories on newspaper front pages, emphasizing the need for responsible reporting that supports national unity and security.

According to reports, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the appeal on Thursday during a two-day National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja. He stressed that while the media has a responsibility to inform the public, editors and reporters must exercise sound judgment by avoiding coverage that could inadvertently amplify the activities of criminal groups.

The minister maintained that responsible journalism plays a vital role in nation-building, noting that experienced journalists understand the importance of deciding not only what to report but also what should be withheld in the broader national interest. He expressed concern over the frequent prominence given to terrorists and bandits in headlines while the efforts and successes of security agencies receive comparatively less attention.

Idris urged media organisations to shift their focus towards recognising the sacrifices and dedication of security personnel rather than offering what he described as free publicity to insurgents and other criminal elements. He emphasized that preserving the nation’s stability is a collective responsibility, adding that the media can only thrive in an environment of peace and security.

He further explained that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is complementing military operations with non-kinetic strategies aimed at addressing the underlying causes of insecurity across the country.

Highlighting other government initiatives, the minister disclosed that more than 1.3 million Nigerian students have benefited from the newly established National Education Loan Fund, ensuring that financial challenges do not prevent young people from accessing higher education.

Idris also revealed that the Federal Government is developing improved welfare packages for media professionals, saying the initiative is intended to enhance their morale, productivity, and overall economic well-being.
