In a significant development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso as a potential replacement for the embattled Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. The nomination is for a term of five years, pending confirmation by the Senate, in accordance with Section 8 (1) of the CBN Act (2007), which grants the President the authority to appoint the governor.

This nomination comes amid growing concerns over Emefiele’s nine-year tenure at the CBN, marked by chaotic policies on foreign exchange management, development financing, and the recent controversial naira redesign, which has negatively impacted economic growth.

Sources suggest that the nomination is part of efforts to ensure the uninterrupted prosecution of Emefiele and some of his colleagues who have been implicated in alleged financial frauds over the past nine years. Several top officials have been interrogated, and the situation has raised concerns in the Presidency, prompting a swift change of leadership.

Dr. Cardoso, a former chairman of Citibank Nigeria with over 30 years of experience in various sectors, including private, public, and not-for-profit organizations, has been nominated to take over the reins at the CBN.

The President has also approved the nomination of four new deputy governors for the CBN. These appointments reflect President Tinubu’s agenda for reforming the Nigerian economy and enhancing confidence among Nigerians and international partners.

Dr. Cardoso is known for his corporate governance experience and commitment to standing his ground when faced with tough challenges. He is expected to bring professionalism and principled leadership to the CBN, addressing the need for financial system reforms.
