Bola Tinubu Renews Bashir Adewale Adeniyi Tenure As Customs Boss Again

According to a statement issued on Friday, June 19, 2026, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the extension follows the expiration timeline of Adeniyi’s previous tenure extension, which was originally set to end on August 1, 2026.

The additional six months will now run until February 2027 and is aimed at allowing the Customs chief to consolidate ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, while also ensuring a structured and orderly leadership transition within the service.

The statement further noted that during this transition period, Adeniyi will work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, as well as the retirement of officers who have reached the statutory age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi, who joined the Customs Service in the late 1980s after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University, has steadily risen through the ranks over the decades, serving in various senior capacities before his appointment as Comptroller-General in June 2023 by President Tinubu.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Customs Service recently strengthened its international cooperation efforts after handing over several luxury vehicles, including high-end brands such as Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, and Mercedes-Benz, which were intercepted at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos and traced to Canada, to Canadian authorities during a formal ceremony.
