Timipre Sylva, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has submitted a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) requesting the prompt retraction of the revised candidates’ roster for the upcoming November 11 gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State.

In the correspondence addressed to INEC and conveyed by his legal representative, Ahmed Raji, the former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources criticized INEC for displaying bias.

Sylva’s name was omitted from the updated list of candidates for the election, which INEC released on Wednesday. This decision was made subsequent to the disqualification of the former Bayelsa Governor by Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court Abuja on October 9, 2023.

The judge contended that permitting Sylva to compete again would contravene the amended 1999 constitution, as he had already been sworn in twice and served five years as governor of the state. Justice Okorowo further stated that Sylva would exceed the constitutional limit of eight years in office if he were to win and be inaugurated.

Dissatisfied with the judgment, Sylva, through his lawyer Raji, appealed the court’s decision to the Court of Appeal. However, while the appeal is pending, INEC released a list of candidates for the election that did not include the APC candidate’s name.

In his letter to INEC via his legal representative, Sylva respectfully urged the immediate retraction of the amended list. He expressed astonishment that INEC would publish such information when the judgment it relied upon had already been appealed.
