Why We Choose Foreign-Made SUVs Over Nigerian-Made Ones – Senator Karimi Speaks
In the midst of the ongoing debate surrounding the proposed acquisition of luxury vehicles by federal lawmakers, which has garnered criticism from many Nigerians, Sunday Karimi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, clarified that members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives opt for foreign-made Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) such as Land Cruisers and Prados due to their “quality and durability.”
Representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly, Karimi explained his position during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Wednesday.

When questioned about the lawmakers’ preference for foreign-made vehicles over locally manufactured ones, he stated, “Today, we decided for Toyota because Toyota has a name and a longstanding name for quality and durability…As our local manufacturing companies develop, we are going to patronize them.”
Karimi emphasized that federal lawmakers require these vehicles for oversight duties and extensive travel within their constituencies.
He further justified the procurement of utility vehicles, highlighting the poor condition of Nigerian roads. He stated, “If you look at Nigerian roads all over the Federation, we have a serious problem because nothing much has been done in the last years. Most of our roads are terribly bad.”
Regarding the choice of foreign-made vehicle brands, the lawmaker indicated, “In the future, as the Nigerian manufacturing sector develops, we will patronize them.”
