Jubilation As Appeal Court Sacks Labour Party Lawmaker, Declares Winner

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has removed Hon. Destiny Nwagwu, the Labour Party (LP) lawmaker representing Aba North state constituency in Abia.

Following the court’s decision, Nwagwu staged a protest in Aba, specifically at Brass junction, contesting his removal.

The appellate court affirmed Aaron Uzodike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the duly elected representative for Aba North state constituency.

Nwagwu’s legal team reportedly failed to establish in court that their client was validly nominated for the 2023 general election. Consequently, the PDP candidate sought a review of the election petition tribunal’s judgment in Umuahia, which initially upheld Nwagwu as the winner, dismissing Hon. Aaron’s petition.

As of the report filing, Nwagwu and his team had not officially commented on the loss, with sources close to him mentioning that he was not inclined to speak at that time.

It is worth noting that Nwagwu also experienced a controversial defeat to Uzodike in the 2019 general election, a contest marked by contentious declarations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In 2019, Nwagwu ran for Aba North state constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with Alex Otti as their gubernatorial candidate.

Meanwhile, Uzodike’s victory has generated jubilation within the PDP camp, further bolstering the party’s efforts to assume leadership in the Abia State House of Assembly.
