He disclosed his sponsorship of a bill focused on self-defense and the regulation of firearms ownership, emphasizing its relevance in light of recent security challenges, notably the tragic Plateau killings that claimed the lives of over 100 civilians.

He asserted, “There must be an amendment bill in the Senate permitting civilian firearm ownership.

My bill, addressing self-defense and firearms ownership regulation, is currently on the Senate docket awaiting its initial reading, addressing this urgent matter.”

Expressing satisfaction that the issue has gained national attention and generated diverse opinions, Nwoko highlighted the necessity of empowering law-abiding citizens with firearms, particularly in the face of inadequate existing security measures.

He argued that allowing responsible individuals to possess firearms could offer a sense of security, enabling them to protect themselves and their families from immediate threats.

However, Nwoko emphasized the need for strict controls to prevent misuse and abuse of firearm ownership.

He stated, “To avoid sabotage and abuse, multiple layers of control must be implemented to ensure effective regulation.

It is imperative to underscore that the proposal for firearm ownership is accompanied by stringent regulations and comprehensive training.

This ensures that firearms are in the possession of responsible individuals who grasp the gravity of ownership and are adequately trained to handle these weapons safely.
