2026 World Cup: 16 Players Of Nigerian Descent Set To Light Up Tournament

According to IReporter Online, Nigeria may not have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the nation’s football influence will still be strongly felt when the tournament begins across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Reports indicate that 16 players of Nigerian descent are expected to feature at the global showpiece, representing nine different countries across Europe, North America, and Africa.

Leading the group is England international Bukayo Saka, who is set to make his second World Cup appearance after starring at the 2022 edition. The Arsenal winger, born in London to Nigerian parents, has developed into one of England’s most decisive attackers. He will be joined in the Three Lions squad by Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, both of whom were previously eligible to represent Nigeria.

Germany’s challenge will be boosted by Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala, who qualifies for Nigeria through his father and is expected to play a key role following his recovery from injury. He will be joined by Felix Nmecha, another player of Nigerian heritage.

Switzerland will rely on experienced defender Manuel Akanji, heading to his third World Cup, alongside forward Noah Okafor, while Austria captain David Alaba—born to a Nigerian father and Filipino mother—remains one of the most prominent figures of Nigerian descent in world football. Austria may also include midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka in their squad.

For hosts United States, striker Folarin Balogun will lead the attack after choosing to represent the country despite eligibility for Nigeria and England.

France-bound winger Michael Olise is also set for his first World Cup appearance after an impressive club season, having been eligible for Nigeria, England, and Algeria before committing to the French national team.

Canada will parade a trio of Nigerian-born talents—Tani Oluwaseyi, Promise David, and Owen Goodman—while Norway will depend on winger Antonio Nusa. South Africa’s squad is expected to feature defender Ime Okon, another player with Nigerian heritage making strides at international level.
