The President of the NUP, Godwin Abumisi, made this distressing announcement during a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, highlighting the dire economic challenges faced by pensioners in the country.

Expressing deep concern over the plight of retirees, Abumisi lamented the lack of consideration for the welfare of pensioners by the government, citing examples such as retirees in Enugu receiving as little as N450 as their monthly pension.

“This situation is alarming and unacceptable. How can pensioners survive on such paltry sums? It’s a reflection of the dire state of affairs in our country,” Abumisi exclaimed.

He emphasized that the issue of retirees receiving minimal pension payments, ranging from N450 to N1,000, is particularly rampant in the Southeastern states, underscoring the urgent need for pension harmonization across the nation.

Abumisi attributed the disparity in pension rates to the failure of many states to implement the reviewed minimum wage, which has resulted in pension increases corresponding to these wage reviews not being realized.

Furthermore, he referenced the Federal Government’s expressed interest in addressing the pension crisis, citing the report on pension harmonization submitted to the government by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission in 2023.

As pensioners continue to grapple with financial hardships, the NUP remains committed to advocating for their rights and welfare, urging swift action from the government to address this pressing issue and alleviate the suffering of retirees nationwide.
