In a press briefing held in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Speaker Martin Amaewhule, accompanied by 26 members of the Assembly, outlined a series of grievances against Governor Fubara and certain members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership.
The assembly accused Governor Fubara of failing to uphold the terms of the Presidential Peace Accord, which he voluntarily signed, and criticized his alignment with PDP leaders who recently pledged support to President Bola Tinubu and himself.
Highlighting their withdrawal of a previous impeachment notice against Governor Fubara, the lawmakers expressed hope for a change in his conduct. However, they warned of resuming impeachment proceedings should he persist in what they described as continual constitutional violations.
Amaewhule also condemned attacks on the legislature, including the burning and demolition of the assembly chamber, attributing these incidents to adversaries seeking to undermine the institution’s independence.
The assembly further denounced individuals and groups, including former PDP members, for allegedly attempting to discredit their legitimacy and misinform the public. They accused these entities of orchestrating campaigns against the assembly and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, while expressing unwavering support for President Tinubu and Governor Fubara.
In their closing remarks, the assembly reaffirmed their commitment to legislative oversight and vowed to uphold the rule of law in Rivers State, emphasizing their dedication to serving the interests of their constituents.
The statement concluded with a call for President Tinubu’s support in the face of external pressures, reiterating their allegiance to the “Renewed Hope Agenda” and urging Nigerians to rally behind the government’s efforts for economic recovery and development.
