Kanunta, Kanu’s younger brother, took to X to express bewilderment over the change in charges and criticized the Nigerian judiciary for what he perceives as a failure to adhere to the rule of law.

He questioned, “What is the purpose of ‘disclosure’ in court processes in the Nigerian judiciary? It is very laughable that the zoological Republic of Nigeria and its judges have failed to stick to this rule of law. Why did the whole charges against #MaziNnamdikanu change from treason to terrorism?”

Kanunta’s inquiry comes after Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court urged Kanu to either allow the trial to commence or face an indefinite adjournment. This ultimatum followed persistent claims by Kanu’s lead lawyer that his client was not adequately prepared for trial.

Despite Justice Nyako setting May 20 for rulings on fresh applications argued by Kanu, the defendant vehemently objected to the commencement of the trial. However, Justice Nyako insisted on progress and gave Kanu the option to either start the trial today or have it adjourned indefinitely.

The unfolding drama underscores the tensions surrounding Kanu’s legal proceedings and the complexities of his legal defense strategy.
