3,114 Residents Apprehended For Violating Lagos Environmental Laws

The Lagos State Government has reported the arrest of 3,114 individuals for contravening various environmental regulations across the state in the past year. Wahab outlined that among those apprehended, 1,037 individuals were caught crossing highways and neglecting to utilize pedestrian bridges. Additionally, 165 miscreants and squatters occupying pedestrian bridges were evicted, and the bridges were subsequently cleaned.

The commissioner emphasized the government’s intensified efforts to apprehend and prosecute the ringleaders responsible for renting out under-bridge accommodations, where tenants, including families with children, resided. Recently, an operation led to the discovery of a significant illegal housing settlement beneath the Dolphin Bridge in Ikoyi. Authorities dismantled structures comprising 80 partitioned rooms and a container used for illicit activities. Twenty-six miscreants were arrested during the operation, with ongoing efforts to apprehend the gang leaders behind the illegal rental activities.

Highlighting further achievements, Wahab mentioned the joint efforts of the Kick Against Indiscipline and the State Task Force on Special Offences in clearing various under-bridge locations such as Ijora Causeway, Apongbon, and Obalende, which had become havens for undesirable elements posing security risks.

Moreover, the agencies conducted clearance operations at the Lagos Coastal Road in Maiyegun Estate, Jakande, in preparation for road construction activities. A total of 1,886 individuals, including illegal traders, street vendors, environmental polluters, and cart pushers, were arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the 2017 Lagos State Environmental Protection Management Law.

These enforcement actions underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and orderly environment in Lagos State while promoting public safety and security.
