ASUU Warns Of Imminent-Collapse Of Nigeria’s University-System, Urges Government-Action (Details)
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sounded the alarm over the gradual collapse of Nigeria’s university system due to the government’s failure to address outstanding issues with the union. ASUU calls for urgent intervention to prevent a total breakdown.
ASUU has urged stakeholders to press the federal and state governments to resolve pending issues to avert further industrial crises in the already fragile university system.
At a rally held at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED) in Oyo, EAUED ASUU Chairman Michael Ojo highlighted unresolved issues, including the release of funds for university revitalization, the illegal dissolution of governing councils, and the release of withheld salaries.
Ojo emphasized the need for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to approve funds for critical projects on university campuses nationwide and demanded full payment of all ASUU members’ entitlements, condemning the government’s “no work, no pay” policy as a breach of international labor law.
He also called on the government to replace IPPIS with UTAS and to allow universities to operate according to their established laws. ASUU urged the federal government to pay withheld salaries of members on sabbatical or adjunct capacity and to stop the proliferation of universities, instead focusing on empowering existing institutions to address national challenges.
Ojo appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to release funds to address the university’s indebtedness and the payment of a 25/35 percent salary award to its members.
