Let me begin my political analysis and narration from the days of John Odigie Oyegun, who served as the governor from January 1992 until November 1993. His tenure was cut short due to military intervention, leading to the rule of Military Administrator Colonel Mohammed Abdul Salam Onuka from December 1993 until September 1994. Edo State, like the rest of Nigeria, remained under military dictatorship until May 29, 1999.

On this historic date, Chief Lucky Igbinedion of the PDP was elected governor. His tenure, lasting until May 29, 2007, is often remembered as one of the darkest periods in Edo State’s history. The Igbinedion administration was plagued by absenteeism and mismanagement. The governor’s frequent absences and lavish lifestyle left the state’s affairs neglected. Public servants faced arbitrary delays in salary payments, pensions were owed, and the infrastructure crumbled. Roads were in deplorable conditions, industries collapsed and many Edo indigenes saw no other option but to seek opportunities abroad, leading to a mass exodus. These years are often referred to as the “Dark Days” under PDP rule, characterized by widespread corruption and inefficiency.

The people’s disillusionment with the PDP set the stage for change. Despite an initial setback with Prof. Osariehmien Osunbor’s brief tenure from May 29, 2007, to November 12, 2008, the courts eventually validated the true mandate. On November 12, 2008, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of the Action Congress (AC) was sworn in as governor. Oshiomhole’s administration marked a turning point for Edo State.

Under Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who later joined the APC, Edo State experienced significant progress. His tenure, from November 12, 2008, to November 12, 2016, brought about remarkable infrastructural development. Major roads and streets were constructed and rehabilitated, drainage systems were improved, and the state’s educational facilities were revamped under the “Red Roof” revolution. Healthcare saw notable improvements with new health centers and hospitals. Economic development was prioritized through job creation programs and support for small and medium-sized enterprises. Urban renewal projects beautified Benin City, while security enhancements and public service reforms promoted transparency and accountability. Oshiomhole’s administration left a legacy of growth and development, setting a high standard for governance in Edo State.

With the momentum of progress, Edo State hoped for continuity in development by electing Godwin Obaseki in 2016. However, the promise of further advancements has not been realized. Governor Obaseki’s tenure has been fraught with numerous grievances from the people. Complaints about poor infrastructure development, high unemployment rates, underfunded healthcare, and educational sector issues have persisted. Allegations of corruption and mismanagement have undermined public trust. Political conflicts and disputes have distracted from governance, while issues of land use and security remain pressing concerns.

In contrast, the APC’s candidate for the upcoming election, Senator Monday Okpebholo, represents a beacon of hope. His track record in the senatorial district speaks volumes. Okpebholo has initiated and completed numerous projects, including road construction, healthcare centers, and electricity projects, demonstrating his commitment to development and the well-being of the people even as a private individual. His deputy, RT Hon. Dennis Idahosa, known as “Mr. Projects,” has also shown a deep understanding of legislative duties and has earned the pride of the Ovia Federal Constituency through his impactful work.

As we approach the governorship election, it is crucial to reflect on the history of governance in Edo State. The sacrifices made and the struggles endured have brought us to this pivotal moment. The dark days of PDP rule under Lucky Igbinedion, the transformative progress under Adams Oshiomhole, and the challenges faced under Godwin Obaseki should guide our decision. Edo State needs leaders who are committed to transparency, development, and the well-being of its people.

It is time to reject the stagnation and regression of the past years under PDP. By supporting the APC and electing Senator Monday Okpebholo and his deputy, RT Hon.
