Court Reinstates Edo Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu Amid Rising Political Tensions
Landmark decision, the Court of Appeal has reinstated Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, dismissing the appeal filed by the Edo State House of Assembly. This ruling upholds an earlier judgment by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which had overturned Shaibu’s impeachment.
Shaibu was ousted from office on April 8 after the Edo State House of Assembly accused him of leaking confidential government information. However, Shaibu contended that his removal was politically motivated, rooted in his ambition to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Following his impeachment, Omobayo Godwins, Governor Obaseki’s nominee, was swiftly confirmed as the new deputy governor. Despite this, on July 17, the Federal High Court ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement and mandated the payment of all entitlements due to him since his removal.
Amid the ongoing appeal, Shaibu resumed his duties, leading to accusations from the state government that he was impersonating Godwins. Shaibu firmly rejected these claims, calling them an “affront to the judiciary and a clear violation of the trial court’s judgment.” He emphasized that Godwins was merely an “appointee of Governor Godwin Obaseki” and not an elected official.
This ruling carries significant weight for the political landscape in Edo State, highlighting the judiciary’s independence and the importance of the rule of law. The state government has been directed to reinstate Shaibu fully, including restoring his security detail and other entitlements.
As tensions in Edo State continue to escalate, with Shaibu’s reinstatement potentially challenging Governor Obaseki’s authority, it’s crucial to ensure that the rule of law prevails. The people of Edo State deserve a government that respects the constitution and the judiciary, and all stakeholders must work together to uphold these principles.
