a victim of $115,000.
Justice H.L. Abba-Aliyu delivered the verdict after Igbo pleaded guilty to charges of internet fraud, criminal impersonation, obtaining money under false pretenses, and money laundering. The prosecution, led by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), revealed that Igbo had posed as a woman named Jessica Allen, a successful cryptocurrency trader from the U.S. He fraudulently acquired 5.26 Bitcoins worth $115,000 from Aaron Baker, an American citizen, by presenting a fake investment opportunity.
The crime took place in 2022 in Abuja. EFCC prosecutor M.K. Hussain outlined that the offence violated Section 321 of the Penal Code, punishable under Section 324 of the same law. Following his guilty plea, the court sentenced Igbo to one year in prison, with the option of a N1 million fine.
Additionally, the court ordered the restitution of $16,110 and $67,487.79 worth of cryptocurrency, along with funds from Igbo’s bank account, to Baker through the U.S. Embassy.
The EFCC’s investigation into Igbo began after a complaint from Baker, who claimed he was duped into transferring the funds under the guise of an investment opportunity in cryptocurrency.
