Fowl Theft Case: Peter Obi Unveils New Details, Applauds Governor Adeleke

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, revealed on Friday that a man sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl had already served 14 years in prison for the same crime before receiving the death penalty. Obi shared this information in a post on the X platform…READ MORE…

The 2023 LP presidential candidate praised Governor Ademola Adeleke for intervening to stop the execution of the individual, arguing that the court’s ruling represented a cruel form of punishment.

Obi contended that the man’s situation illustrates the flaws in Nigeria’s legal system, where individuals who steal from the public are often celebrated while those who dare to challenge the status quo are criminalized.

He criticized a system that favors impunity over integrity and called for urgent judicial reform in Nigeria. Obi stated: “I commend Governor Ademola Adeleke for intervening to prevent the inhumane death sentence for the theft of a fowl and eggs—an act for which the individual had already spent 14 years in prison. Such a sentence goes beyond the bounds of justice, assuming the crime even warranted such severity to begin with.

“This case highlights the severe disparities within the Nigerian legal system. Those who express their views are treated as criminals, while individuals who misappropriate billions of public funds are celebrated, even when caught. Meanwhile, those engaged in honest business face cumbersome regulations and unwarranted suspicion, as though achieving success through integrity is a crime.

“Our current system rewards impunity and punishes integrity. This is a clear indication of the urgent need for judicial reform and true accountability in governance.”

Naija News recalls that Governor Adeleke had taken action, advocating for clemency in the case of Segun Olowookere, an indigene sentenced to death for fowl theft. Segun’s mother, Folashade Olowookere, emotionally recounted her son’s plight during an interview on the YouTube podcast hosted by Nollywood actress Biola Adebayo.
