presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly on December 18, ₦460 million is earmarked for utility vehicle procurement, maintenance, and fueling.

Of this amount, ₦350 million is dedicated to purchasing new vehicles, while ₦110 million will go towards fueling and ₦45 million for vehicle maintenance. Additionally, a substantial ₦1.5 billion is requested for travel expenses, covering both domestic and international trips for ministry personnel.

A closer look at the proposal reveals that ₦700 million is allocated for local travel, which will include training and official duties, while ₦800 million is set aside for international travel. This budget proposal pertains only to the ministry’s headquarters and does not account for additional expenditures linked to the six agencies under its supervision, including the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, Legal Aid Council, and the National Human Rights Commission, among others.

In parallel, the House of Representatives is deliberating a bill that would separate the roles of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) from the Minister of Justice. This proposal, co-sponsored by lawmakers Mansur Soro and Oluwole Oke, seeks to amend Nigeria’s Constitution to create a distinct office for the AGF, separate from the Minister of Justice. The bill is currently under review by the House Committee on Constitution Review.
